Rossland, British Columbia, Red Mountain's host community, is a storied mining town built during the Gold Rush of the 1890's. As Rossland grew because of the Gold Rush, it became one of western Canada's largest cities for a time, and this shows in Rossland with historic buildings everywhere. Rossland has two schools, a library, and a thriving community of businesses. The town is considered "Canada's Mountain Bike Capital", and is also world-renowned for Red Mountain Resort and its scene as the quintessential "ski town" in the winter.

Rossland continues to be an epicentre of cultural activities such as the Rossland Mountain Film Festival, and the Winter Carnival, and attracts talent such as artists and gourmet restauranteurs - allowing the community to enjoy a broad cultural base in which it can support itself.
