Summer Preparations

This summer at Red we are working to enhance our winter product. While the bike park will not be in operation, there are a number of improvements currently underway in preparation for the 2008/09 ski season. With a deep snow base we have been able to get an early start on our brushing and pruning program and currently have a crew on mountain working to prune some of your favourite gladed areas including Powder Fields. This work will continue throughout the summer with extensive brushing to cut back alder and open up overgrown areas. Additionally, a new hiking and biking trail has been commissioned on Red Mountain this summer with an estimated completion date of late fall.

Red has also started a mechanical, structural and electrical audit of all chairlifts. This audit is being conducted by third party consultants to give a thorough assessment of all lift components and to ensure the best reliability for our guests.

Work on the new Caldera neighbourhood at the base of the mountain has also begun. Caldera will be built based on design guidelines supporting tree retention, a recreational trail network and environmental standards. For safety purposes the Caldera site will soon be closed to the public and trails will be rerouted around the construction area.

About Ski Cross

An electrifying sport for participants and spectators alike, Ski Cross features four skiers racing simultaneously down a technically demanding course, which resembles a motocross track. Participants navigate man-made and natural rollers, jumps, banked turns and tabletops at speeds in excess of 70km/h, in a single elimination format where the fastest two skiers to cross the finish line in each heat, advance to the next round until the final heat determines the winner. This combination of terrain and format are guaranteed to make Ski Cross a full-on thrill ride for all involved.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), recognizing it’s exciting potential, has inducted Ski Cross into the Olympic Games, where it will make it’s debut, as a full medal sport, in Vancouver 2010. Canada, being among the most proactive ski nations, has formed one of the first national organizations for governing Ski Cross. This organizations’ immediate objective is the achievement of medals in 2010 with the ultimate goal of seeing Ski Cross become a vital discipline in Canadian winter sport.

Turkey Roast Pot Luck 08 a huge success!

The 2008 Turkey Roast Pot Luck was a huge success this year thanks to Red Mountain Resort and the many turkey and ham donors.  The cafeteria was packed with guests who assisted in bringing in $282.77 in donations.  This year’s donations will go to BEAKS (Bird Emergency & Kare Society) out of Blueberry Creek, BC Charity # 86948 3750 RR0001.  For more information on how you too can contribute to BEAKS visit www.kics.bc.ca/beaks/

Turkey Roast organizer and Red Snowsports Instructor Tom Grubisic stated “The Red Mountain Community sure does know how to feed the Red Mountain Community”.  Thanks for all of your hard work Tom, and a big thank you to all those who donated food to the event. See you again next year!
