NORAM Ski Cross Results

Th first NORAM Ski Cross competition in Canada concluded successfully today at Red Mountain Resort.  An international field of skiers raced head-to-head four at a time down Red’s ski cross course, putting them one step closer to qualifying for next winter’s Olympic Games.

Canada’s David Holmes from the Ontario Team took the gold medal in the men’s category and Romania’s Ruxandra Nedelcu captured the ladies’ top spot.  Also known as Andra, Nedelcu is representing Romania while actually residing in North Vancouver.

“This is our second Ski Cross event at Red this season.  The race ran very smoothly and the future of Ski Cross is very positive. The fact that we were able to get this event elevated to NORAM status is great for the athletes.  Canada already has a great Ski Cross National Team and this competition was a timely addition to our development program.  We had a lot of smiling faces today.  In Ski Cross the experience of having other skiers racing right next to you at the same time is very engaging and thrilling for the athletes and spectators,” commented Chris Kent BC Ski Cross Event Director.

“This is the first NORAM event in Canada, and the third (NORAM Ski Cross) ever held” stated Greg Frechette, Head Coach of the BC Ski Cross team.  “To have an event of this calibre is a great experience for young kids as it gives them an opportunity to improve their results.  This competition attracted competitors from the Ukraine, the Netherlands, Romania, Colorado, Utah, Ontario, Washington, Oregon, Alberta and BC.  And we are looking forward to coming back to Red again next year”.

Next winter, Ski Cross will be making its Olympic debut at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games at Cypress Mountain.  Ski Cross is an event that combines the thrill of freestyle skiing with the competitive rush of downhill racing.  Red is helping pave the way to the Olympics for many Ski Cross and Snowboard Cross athletes by providing a high calibre venue to train and compete.  In February 2009 the BC Snowboard Cross returned to Red for two competitions along with the BC Ski Cross Championships.  Last year Red hosted the 2008 Canadian National Ski Cross Championships and a BC Snowboard Cross Series event.

“Our goal is to provide athletes a safe and challenging venue for training and competition. We hope that many of the athletes racing here today will eventually make it to the Olympics.  Red will continue to do everything possible to support Snowboard Cross (a.k.a. Boardercross) and Ski Cross high performance development in the future” commented Red Mountain General Manager, Erik Kalacis.

Congratulations to the top finishers of today’s NORAM Western Canadian Ski Cross Championship:

The Gathering of Legends at Red

John Falkiner, Ace Kvale, Marko Shapiro, Paolo Tassi and John Eaves were only a few of the many legendary skiers, photographers and filmers who visited Red Mountain last week for the first annual Gathering. As chronicled in the current issue of Ski Journal, John Falkiner, Mark Shapiro and Ace Kvale along with a crew of friends, perfected the free-ski alpine lifestyle, melded mountaineering with mogul-mania, fashion with free-dog, and managed to stay under the radar to all except the cognoscenti of the ski and mountain industries.

The Gathering at Red celebrated a remarkable convergence of these international adventurers who have crossed paths in far-flung locations but have rarely been captured in the same place at the same time. Last Saturday night marked the end of a three-day powder-filled ski fest culminating with an evening of slide shows and videos by these international artists as well as locals from the Kootenay region. The audience was wowed by the level of talent and quality of imagery during the presentation and finished off the evening dancing in the Rafters pub to the rocking blues tunes of John Eaves and the Blues Riders.

Check out the recent Ski Journal Article featuring John, Ace, Marko, Paolo and many more>

Thanks to all the presenters, organizers, volunteers and participants for adding another legendary moment in Red’s history. Watch our Facebook Group and Youtube Channel for images and video of the event coming soon.
