RED’s Snowcat Service FAQ

RED launches 2012-13 Cat Service to Grey Mountain

RED Mountain resort is proud to announce it’s 2012-2013 season snowcat access to the new runs on Grey Mountain. We’ve purchased a Pisten Bully 200, a snowcat with a spacious cabin that will swiftly shuttle skiers to the peak of Grey. With so much terrain to easily access, these cat runs will deliver some amazing experiences.

Cost:

Shuttle trips cost $10 a ride, from the top of Rino’s Run on an alpine cat road to the highest point on Grey Mountain.

For the 2012/13 season Grey Mountain will form part of Red Mountain Resorts operating boundary and services will include ski patrol, avalanche control, end of the day sweeping inbounds and out of bounds signage and route mapping. The terrain on Grey Mountain will provide guests with intermediate to advanced ski experiences on un-groomed slopes and glades.

How do I make a reservation?

No reservations required. You just ski up to the snow cat stop, located at the intersection of Rino’s Run and Silver Sheep, where you purchase a ticket from the attendant who will ensure you have all the information you need and that you are prepared for your Cat Skiing trip to Grey Mountain.

HOURS OF OPERATION:

Is the Grey Mountain cat running every day?

Weather permitting, the cat will be operating from 10 :00 am to 2:00 pm Thursday through Sunday and Holidays. The cat also will be available Monday – Wednesday for group bookings.

What is the terrain like?

Fall line runs, trees, gullies we’ve got it all! If you’ve skied or ridden at Red Mountain Resort you will find Grey Mountain to offer a similar 360 degree experience to that of Granite Mountain.

The southern slopes of Grey are intermediate runs and glades while the eastern slopes offer a more advanced experience.

The North Side of Grey Mountain will be closed to Cat skiers for the 2012-13 but we expect it will be operable when the lift service begins for 2013-14 season.

Not sure if your skills are quite up to scratch, why not book a powder lesson with our ski instructors?!

How many cats do you operate per day?

We operate one cat which makes approximately 8 trips per day from the top of Rino’s Run to the summit of Grey Mountain, so you don’t miss out on any runs!

I want the cat to myself, what are my options (Private Cat Rental)?

We have private cat rental available Monday through Wednesdays, visit the guest services counter in the base lodge to enquire about details. The cat can be rented for the day for a fee of $799. We also have catering service available to make your day in the cat even more special. Cat and catered reservations are based on availability on a first come first served basis.

How much vertical should I expect in a day?

Red Mountain Resort offers 2,919 feet of vertical. We don’t have a cap on how much you can do! The top of Grey to the Easy Street trail to Motherlode is 2,000 vertical feet.

Is there a Grey Mountain Trail Map?

Yes. A Grey Mountain Trail Map will be provided at the Cat Stop at the top of Rino’s /Silver Sheep. Trail Maps for Grey will also be available at Guest Services.

If I don’t take the Cat can I ski tour to Grey Mountain?

Yes. Ski touring to Grey and beyond is part of the Red Mountain experience. We ask that use of the Cat Road for touring is coordinated in a similar fashion to the trail etiquette and safety.

If you have questions before your arrival give us a shout at 250-362-7384 or stop in at Guest Services in the DayLodge.

How long would it take on average to skin or hike from the nearest lift assessed run to the top of Grey Mountain?

  2. codyNo Gravatar says:

skins about 45 mins to hour

  3. SarahNo Gravatar says:

Is the Cat/Grey experience in operation now?

  4. DavidNo Gravatar says:

I’ve been waiting for the attendant to buy a ticket for about 2 weeks now. Also, why does a plain hamburger with a slop of (potato salad?) cost $11?

  5. SkientrepreneurNo Gravatar says:

Can we purchase tickets right away at 9am and then come back at 9:30 to take the cat so we can ski instead of waiting in line?
We’ll be there Feb 27th and March 1st, the day between we plan on hitting Whitewater. If we were to rent the cat on that Wednesday, we are all expert skiers, can we get more than 8 runs due to the speed we ski at?

    Thank you
