Dane was a standout performer, with numerous podium finishes through the K1 and K2 divisions, winning the overall K2 provincial title to round out his racing career.

Dane was constantly drawn to Red Mountains steep trees, pillows and cliffs that proved the perfect training ground for Dane as he progressed his free ride skills.

In 2007 Dane moved towards a professional career in film skiing, he forged a working realtionship with Theory-3 Media, giving him his first ski segment in “The Journal” during 07/08. In 2009 Theory-3 merged with Poor Boyz Productions, a big name player in the history of ski films and Dane’s favorite production company. The merge gave Dane his breakthrough performance, showcasing his backcountry jump and big mountain prowess with the opening segment in “Every Day Is A Saturday”, exploding him onto the freeski scene. Dane’s hard work payed off and earned him nomintations for Best Male Performance at The Powder Awards and the International Freeski Film Festival, he went on to take home Best Male Performance at the International Freeski Film Festival and Breakthrough Performance at The Powder Awards.

Riding on the high of the 2009 season, Dane poured his heart and soul into film skiing, producing numerous award winning segments with Poor Boyz Productions through 2012.

In 2013 Dane sustained a season ending injury, dislocating his hip in the Revelstoke backcountry suffering a traumatic 6 hr helicopter rescue.
Dane is not one to sit back and let life pass by, he picked up the pieces and was quickly on the mend doing physio and gaining strength. Recovering like a true professional.

Dane returned to the film arena in 2014 with Teton Gravity Research, producing a feature segment in TGR’s movie “Almost Ablaze”.

2015 saw Dane transform as he tuned his focus to big mountain skiing, showcasing his skills in Haines Alaska with Stellar Media and in the Neacola mountain range at TGR’s Fantasy Camp.

2016 was a completely new aspect of skiing for Dane as he joined forces with Ian Macintosh and Griffin Post in the Tordrillo mountain range to camp and climb Alaska’s steepest razor back spine walls for Teton Gravitys movie “Tight Loose”. The team spent 16 days camped on the glacier, weathering heavy snowfall and cold nights. When a high pressure rolled in the crew began there 3am morning ritual, climbing 2 hrs up steep fluted spines under starry moonlight skies, enjoying spectacular sunrises while forging ahead to the summit for the reward of skiing the greatest lines of the year.
Camping, climbing and skiing aligns with Danes active adventure lifestyle and is an area he’s excited to pursue.

Current Ski Resort: Red Mountain Resort

Occupation: Freeskier

Background Information:
My name is Mike Hopkins and I am a professional Freeskier and Moutain biker. I reside in a little place called Rossland, British Columbia, which is hidden in the midst of the Kootenay mountain range. I have called Rossland home for the last 15 years and still to this day (even after traveling the world) have yet to find a community that better suits the needs of a freeride athlete.

Rossland has a population of about four thousand, so as you can imagine you have to find things to entertain yourself with. For me it was plain and simple, skiing in the winter and biking in the summer. I spent the majority of my time with my brother ski racing and competing on the BC Cup Series. When I finished high school, I headed to University where I spent more time on the ski hill than in the lecture hall. I pulled the plug on school in my second year to compete on the freeski circuit. From that point until now everything has been a blur.

I now spend my year filming, shooting, and competing throughout both the bike and ski season. I get to work with great companies and travel the world doing what I love, so naturally I am a pretty happy guy.

As my parents both work at Red and have for my entire life, I have always spent a great deal of time at the hill. Until I was six, I just spent my time just zooming around with my parents but at age six I joined the Nancy Greene Ski League. I raced with them until I was ten, when I realized that freeskiing was more my pace and joined the Red Freeriders. At 13, I joined the freeski academy at RSS and have been with them ever since, participating in big mountain competitions all over Western Canada and into the USA.

Background Information:
I began skiing at the age of three when my parents put me on skis at the Salmo Ski Area. At age five, I started ski racing in the Nancy Greene Ski League. I continued ski racing at Salmo and Whitewater until I was 12 years old, when I joined the Red Mountain Racers and began skiing at Red full-time. I raced for three more years with the Red Mountain Racers, and then switched to the Red Mountain Freeski Academy to further pursue my passion for skiing. This has proved to be an extraordinary program which allows me to ski 5 days a week all winter long and still maintain my academic standards. This will be my third year skiing and competing with the Freeski Academy in Big Mountain and Slope Style competitions, around Western Canada and the US. I’m pumped for another great season at Red and on the road.

Name: Simon Hillis

Hometown:: Rossland, B.C.

Current Ski Resort: Red Mountain Resort, of course! Shred the POW!

Age: 8

Born: Bali, Indonesia, April 24, 2002

Background Information:
Great things come in small packages. Born in Bali Indonesia, Simon moved to Rossland with his family at the age of three and by the end of his first season on skis, the pint-sized Simon had savvy locals talking about his picture-perfect technique and his relentless hunger to be on his skis all day every day.

Simon spent the next three years dragging his dad around the mountain while also competing in the Nancy Greene Ski League, but steep trees and big air have always been his passion.

During the 09/10 ski season – at the ripe old age of seven – Simon was finally old enough to enter the Junior freeskiing ranks. He became Red Mountain’s youngest ever sponsored team athlete and made a powerful first impression on the Junior Freeskiing circuit, competing against kids four years older. In his debut season, Simon finished third at the Canadian Junior Championships at Red Mountain, third at Fernie’s Freeski Comp, and then topped off his year by winning Red Mountain’s Freeriders Open.

This summer, Simon finally grew enough to graduate from his one buckle toddler’s boots to a proper child’s ski boot, so now the sky’s the limit. To see Simon’s form for yourself, check out the cover of the November issue of SKI Magazine.

Current Ski Resort: Red Mountain

Occupation: Adaptive Snowboarder, Red Shutter Inn Lodge Manager, Landscaper

Background Information:: From snowboarding to surfing my whole life revolves around going out and participating in the activities I enjoy. At 25 years of age I had an accident whilst dropping a cornice on my snowboard in New Zealand in 1998. The accident resulted in a severed spinal cord and a minor head injury. I am now a standing paraplegic with only 50% use of my muscles from the waist down; it has left me a little physically different but no less amped or keen. I got involved with the Canadian Snowboard Federation Adaptive Snowboarding Program in 2006 and haven’t looked back. I have the privilege of helping to make history and watch the program grow as the younger athletes find out about and join the program. As an athlete or a coach I would like to see Adaptive Snowboarding become part of the Paralympics in 2014. The 2007/08 season was difficult, I had an accident while training for my first event in COP and although I was able to overcome the injury for my first two events, I was unable to compete at the 2008 USASA Nationals. I am now completely recovered and more motivated than before to be in the best condition I can be in and train hard to be strong for the 2008/09 winter season and competition.

Greatest Snowboarding accomplishments: Being named to the Canadian National Adaptive Snowboard Team 08/09. Overcoming my disabilities and being able to snowboard! Being North American Alpine & Freestyle Adaptive Champion 07 and last but by no means the least having ridden chest deep Pow(snorkel stuff) at Red Mountain

Background Information:
I grew up in the prairies of Manitoba on a dairy farm. I was blessed enough for my family to move out to the Kootenays where I began to ski at the age of 10 at Kimberly. I was in a few race and moguls programs for a few years but the structure and rules of racing and moguls wasn’t for me and I found myself skipping practice to go ski the terrain park. I finally had enough and got into the Freestyle program. At age 15 I had the opportunity to move to Rossland BC, I quickly joined the Red Mountain Academy and my skiing has evolved and now I found myself hunting down the fresh Powder all around Red resort.
