RED Mountain Maintains Independence, Joins Ikon Pass Community

Fiercely independent RED Mountain has joined the Ikon Pass for winter 2020-21. RED joins 43 iconic Ikon Pass destinations, including Mammoth Mountain, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Snowbird, Alta, Revelstoke, and a veritable bucket list of others around the world.

The Ikon Pass partnership expands RED’s ability to stay competitive in the modern market and strengthen the value proposition it has offered to adventurous guests. The mighty mountain will maintain its independence, ownership and management, its scruffy-chic style, and its singular voice within the ski industry.

Ikon Pass holders will have access to seven days at RED with no blackout dates, and Ikon Base Pass holders will have access to five days, with select blackout dates. There is no access to RED on the Ikon Session Pass 4-Day.

FAQ: GENERAL

Does Joining the IKON Pass mean that RED has sold to Alterra Mountain Company?

Nope. We’re pretty sure someone will spread that rumor, but we are simply an independent partner. Alterra Mountain Company owns 15 iconic destinations and Ikon Pass is partnered with 29 global destinations. RED is the #44 resort on the Ikon Pass. We feel it’s a great fit to be alongside a mix of other legendary mountain destinations that equally hold their own independence.

Will being a part of Ikon Pass mean that RED has to, like, ‘comb its hair and tuck in its shirt’?

Oh, hellz no. RED will continue to be like your weird uncle who simultaneously makes you proud and embarrassed every Thanksgiving. We’re keeping our culture, our swagger, our independence, our fondness for duct tape and our office in Rafters.

Is RED going to become overcrowded now that it has made a deal with one of these multi-hill pass products?

The Ikon Pass does NOT offer unrestricted, unlimited access to RED. The Ikon Pass offers 7 days with no blackout dates and the Ikon Base Pass offers 5 days with some holiday blackout dates. The only pass that offers unlimited days is a RED Season Pass and we all know that there are no huge cities that close to RED, right? Combine that with being Top 10 size-wise in North America and #1 for most acres per skier—plus continual expansions on-mountain and with our parking areas—we believe any bump in visitation will have little effect on the uncrowded and spread-out feeling you get here at RED.

Will getting an Ikon Pass instead of a RED Season Pass mean more powder days for me?

If you’re more of a Powder Highway pilgrimage kinda person, the Ikon Pass offers amazing access to other epic areas like Revelstoke and SkiBig3 in Banff. Just remember that the Ikon Pass only allows options for either 5 or 7 days at RED. You can’t post up here all season unless you have a RED pass.

I’m Canadian and the border is closed to the US. Why would I care about this?

At press time, the US/Canada border closure had been extended to Sept. 21, 2020. None of us knows what will happen with the border, and how Covid 19 will play out throughout North America and the world. But we do know that between now and December a lot could change. We’re planning on riding no matter what. If the border stays closed, a person could have a great season just hitting the Canadian Ikon Pass destinations.

I’m American and the border is closed into Canada. why would I care about this?

Seattle area skiers and snowboarders stand to benefit big time from an Ikon Pass as it allows access to RED, The Summit at Snoqualmie, Crystal Mountain, and Mt. Bachelor. We of course can’t predict when the USA/Canada border will open to international guests but it doesn’t hurt to hope for the best.

Will the Ikon Pass announcement mean that day tickets start getting more and more expensive?

There is no correlation between our ticket prices and this new partnership. We also didn’t even raise our ticket prices and season passes for this year. “We’re all in this together—until the nachos show up!”

Is it worth it for Kootenay Locals to buy an IKON Pass or should we stay 'RED till dead' etc?

Well, that really depends on what rings your cherries, now doesn’t it? The Ikon Pass offers 7-days with no blackout dates, the Ikon Base Pass offers 5-days with selected blackout dates at RED. The only way to ski unlimited days at RED is with a RED season pass. (There is no access to RED on the Ikon Session Pass 4-Day.)

If I already have my IKON Pass, can I go directly to the lift (Direct-to-lift access) or do I need to come to guest services to redeem my tickets?

Got your pass already? Congrats, you’re one step closer to shredding RED this winter. For this winter, Ikon Pass holders will need to go to Guest Services to claim their ticket to ride the mountain.

What benefits/discounts do I get at RED with my IKON Pass?

Each Ikon Pass holder receives 10 Friends & Family tickets and each Ikon Base Pass holder receives 8 Friends & Family tickets offering friends a 25% discount off a one day lift ticket.

There are so many passes and multi-day ticket options. What's the cheapest way to ski at RED?

If you’re a local and don’t want a full season pass, our Kootenay Locals Only Card will still be available with 5, 7 or 9 days of skiing and is the best offer available (9-day Adult Card @ $743 CAD) second to a RED Season Pass. A RED Season Pass is the only option to ski unlimited days. The Ikon Pass provides 7 days with no blackout dates for $1,499 CAD, and an Ikon Base Pass offers 5 days with selected blackout dates for $1,089 CAD. (There is no access to RED on the Ikon Session Pass 4-Day.)
